KIT724 Assignment-3 VR

Introduction / Overview

Based on the requirements of this assignment, I chose the "Campus"  as my topic, and my assets are from the unity asset store, the links of the assets have been added in reference.   In this project, I used two scenes, one is an office with several architectures that are in a conversation on the topic of designing new buildings. Another one is the whole view of the new buildings in thinking.

Description of the application

According to the requirements of the Campus topic, "The design phases involve discussion between architecture (who design the new buildings) and university staff (who will work in the new buildings) around the utilization and functionality of the new space. "

I made the office part regarded as the main part of this application. In the office, there are several workers in it, three of them are architects, and another one is university staff.  The architects are in discussion on the topic of designing the new campus.  They are focusing on the width of the road, the height of each building, and the area of open spaces.  The design graph is on the table. However, as a non-designer stakeholder, the university staff considers some issues that are relevant to his profits, like natural light conditions in open spaces.  For going outside of the office, you can see a virtual campus on the right side, which is the imagination of the view of the design.

Based on Ke's theory,  VR is the use of computer modeling and simulation that enables a person to interact with an 3D visual or other sensory environments.

In this project, I used two actions to express what I want to show.  One is grabbing and another one is touching.  these two actions are the main features of VR interaction(Li et.al 2021), so I used VR technology in this project.

Interaction Design

As mentioned before, I used grabbing and touching interactions to illustrate some virtual behaviors.

Grabbing and throwing:  if a chair prevents your motion, you can grab it and throw it away.

University staff can grab the suitcase which is in front of him and hand it to other architects

touching: the alarm is on in red color, you can touch it to change the color to green.

the screen on the left side wall can be touched to play a video for relaxation.

There is no interaction part in the virtual campus view.

Technical Development

For the interface, I used Oculus Integration as my basic interface support, as well as Low Poly Office and Colorful city as my assets.

Oculus Integration is a package that includes a majority of VR technology supported, such as OVRPlayController, left and right DistanceGrabHand, and so on. They are all basic VR support for motions and grabbing. It also provides a huge number of other methods for multiple VR activities.

For engaging with the interactions:

Grabbing and throwing: hold the inner side button of the R-touch to grab the target object and throw it by releasing the button.

touching: touch the target object by clicking the inner side button of the R-touch.

Descriptions of 3D Models

I put two groups of 3D models in the project, one is the office and another one is the virtual campus.  The office contains 4 workers and several pieces of furniture like chairs, tables, screens, one alarm and so on.  The virtual campus contains a huge number of buildings and roads, which looks like a real campus.  The screenshots of these two groups are in the attachment.
